My Story

ANDREW VENTURE

ENTREPRENEUR-AT-LARGE | TRAVELLER | KITESURFER | OUTDOORSMAN

ANCIENT HISTORY

Originally from New Zealand, I called Australia home for 15 years, after which I have been lost in Asia and Europe for over four years.

My friends want me to live in Bali. My Mum wants me to come back to New Zealand. I want to keep living out of a single bag, and I dream of the day my bank stops blocking my ATM card in every new country.

MAN VS LEGEND

Sometimes pithy tag-lines don't convey the full story, so here are some translations to help distinguish reality from legend.

LEGEND : International Man of Mystery
REALITY : My friends don’t know where I live

LEGEND : Occasional Kitesurfer
REALITY : Does way less kiting than I would like

LEGEND : Awesome Project Manager
REALITY : Frustrating schedulers & engineers

LEGEND : Avid Traveller
REALITY : Forgotten which country is home

LEGEND : Adventurous
REALITY : Can’t stay out of trouble

LEGEND : Entrepreneur-at-large
REALITY : Confusing the tax office since 2014

LEGEND : Sometime Mountain Biker
REALITY : Does once every two years count?

LEGEND : Outdoorsman
REALITY : Like Bear Grylls (hah). Less running. No TV crew

ADVENTURE CREDENTIALS

Outdoor adventure and exploration runs in my blood - I can’t get enough. I love sharing, so here are a couple of my favourites:

4WD ACROSS EVERY AUSTRALIAN DESERT

Ten days between fuel and water on the Simpson Desert. 1,850 kilometres of remote wilderness and camels on the Canning Stock Route. Four months between making a decision and travelling for 20,000km around Australia seriously off the beaten track, while wrangling a full-time career, equipping an expedition grade 4WD, and dealing with major floods ... keep reading

MUNDA BIDDI MOUNTAIN BIKING

450km of spectacular mountain bike trail in Australia’s south-west - equal parts hard work, spectacular views and “how-much-further” questions.

We were fully prepared, having completed one 15 km flat bitumen training ride and one six km fully laden test ride. Surely that is enough for nine consecutive days of riding

WHITEWATER KAYAKING

Three times I have thought kayaking would remove my last breath, but each time fear, adrenaline, urgent action and sheer luck helped me through. After sacrificing kayaks, gear and pride to various river gods, I realised that my perception of risk was lower than the real risk involved in the more challenging rivers, and I re-assessed how long I really wanted to live ...

ENTREPRENEURIAL JOURNEY

Perhaps one of the most challenging things I have done is leave the security of employment and set myself up as an entrepreneur. Leaving behind the security of a good, consistent income challenged me more than I thought it would. A sizeable part of my self-worth was tied to that income ...

BOXED IN

The Gallup Strengths Finder quiz pegs my top personality characteristics as Activator (making stuff happen), Communicator (talking to people), Competitor (trying to win things) and Woo (WTF). Just goes to show you can’t believe everything you read.
